Trunking FAQs

Which D-Line cable trunking should I select?

The choice of trunking should consider the volume of cables being concealed. Check the D-Line trunking dimensions provide sufficient capacity for your requirements. Please see Cable Capacity Guide.

Note product dimensions are external dimensions - please consider wall thickness of D-Line Cable Trunking is typically 1mm; in other words 30x15mm Cable Cover will have internal dimensions approx. 28x13mm (1mm for lid & 1mm for base).

Any tips for measuring up?

Remember to leave space (between D-Line lengths) to accommodate accessory required. For smooth-fit accessories, including connectors for all sizes, use the accessory as the template. Pencil mark the surface and the length, to indicate precisely where the trunking needs to be reach. After installing the lengths, and inserting the cables, the smooth-fit accessory will retro-fit into the space(s) you left.

If using Clip-Over bends and tees accessories, the gaps do not have to be precise; but ensure the lengths are spaced so the rear tabs will grip i.e. the lengths are not too far apart! Then it is easy to attach the corner bends or tee accessory.

Any tips for cutting D-Line Trunking lengths?

For best results use a junior hacksaw and - if preferred - cutting block to help keep blade straight. If using Smooth-Fit Micro 16x8mm Accessories and Connectors (all sizes) a straight cut is important, so the accessory can fit neatly up to the length. If using Clip-Over Accessories, cutting and measuring doesn’t need to be as precise, as the accessories allow a 10mm tolerance.

Pictures show the click-lock at the top side. Can it be at the base instead?

Yes, an installation can be reversed, but the lid then no longer acts as a cable retainer. Installers usually prefer the hinge at the base, so cables are not dropping out along the way!

How many times can the hinge be opened?

D-Line lengths can be opened and closed thousands of times, making it easy to later add or remove cables if required. The hinge is tensioned so it is not too stiff or slack, making D-Line easy to handle.

Can you rely on the self-adhesive for permanent fixing?

D-Line tapes give a strong bond, so take care before securing to the surface. It is possible that tapes can eventually lose effectiveness as adhesive elements vaporise over time, but we have known our cable cover lengths stuck to smooth clean surfaces (by our self-adhesive) for many years. If using a larger cable trunking (such as our 50mm x 25mm for wall mounted TVs) then because of the greater weight and strain on the tape, we advise installers to also use a secondary fixing (wall plug & screw) spaced every 30cm.

How do I remove D-Line Trunking from my wall?

Please remove with caution as adhesive backing does create a strong bond. To remove, slowly pull the trunking from the wall, using a wallpaper scraper or sharp knife behind the adhesive to slowly peel away… then for any additional residue left, use an adhesive removal spray.

I can’t find the colour I want, can I paint D-Line Trunking?

Yes! All D-Line Trunking lengths & accessories are fully paintable. Before painting, key the surface with a fine sandpaper & apply two coats of paint.

Cable Tidy Unit FAQs

Floor Cable Protector FAQs

I need to cover a trailing cable… what type of Floor Cable Cover should I use?

Firstly, you need to determine the total outer width x diameter of the cables you’re looking to cover. Once you’ve identified a Floor Cable Cover that has a sufficient sized cable cavity, you’ll then need to choose based on the type of traffic the floor cover will be subject to… for light or infrequent amounts of pedestrian traffic use Light Duty Floor Cable Cover. For protecting cables under regular foot traffic,
Medium Duty Cable Protector provides effective protection. To protect cables under vehicular traffic, use Heavy Duty Cable Protectors.

I need to cover cables less than 1.8m – can I shorten D-Line Floor Cable Covers?

Yes! Light & Medium Cable Protector Lengths can be cut to size, using a sharp Stanley knife. Heavy Duty Cable Protector cannot be cut to size.

I need to cover an exact length of cable – can lengths be ordered to the exact length required?

No, D-Line Floor Cable Protector lengths are available in 1.8m, 4.5m & 9m length options for Light/Medium Duty, & 765mm lengths for Heavy Duty. Note, Medium Duty & Heavy Cable Protectors are linkable allowing the user to cover any length of cable required… it is insufficient covering, say, only two-thirds of a trailing cable!

Cable Tidy Shelf FAQs

Is there one Top Tip for installation?

Yes, before the installation, please read the instruction leaflet.
By following the instructions, the installation should be possible
in 5-10minutes only!

I’ll want to use the Shelf as a stand for various devices —
is there a guide to weights of popular devices?

iPad   1.4 lbs / 0.63kg
iPhone   0.5lbs / 0.25kg
For 2x iPhones!   1.0lbs / 0.5kg
Sonos speaker   2.2lbs / 1kg
Cordless drill (for charging)   3lbs / 1.4kg

On a smooth flat surface, when properly applied, the peel & stick tape option can easily hold all of the above.

Should we use Tape, or screw-fix the Shelf?

While screw-fix gives double the load bearing capability (i.e. up to 5kg/10lbs), when used as an iPad stand, speaker stand or tablet holder for example, note that tape-option is completely reliable also; the choice of installation method is more about the substrate or type of mounting surface.

If on wallpaper, always screw-fix. It is important to realize that many wallpapers are produced by a backing layer a printed layer and a top finish layer. With tape option, under the weight of electronic devices, expect the top layer of a wallpaper will rip from it’s bottom layer… so causing the Cable Tidy Shelf to drop and your wallpaper to rip. A screw-fix is essential, otherwise you’d be relying only on a layer of paper to hold the weight!

However, on a smooth, dry and clean surface, such as ceramic tiles, woods or drywall, the tapes should form a very effective bond.

For putting the Cable Tidy Shelf around a wall socket, or above a socket, I want to screw-fix — but how can I be sure there are no cables behind the drill positions?

Around sockets there will definitely be cables, so this is a very important safety concern. Often sockets will be connected in a circuit with 240v cables wired on vertical or horizontal lines, but sometimes the cables might feed diagonally. We know some users will loosen screws of the socket front, then pull forward the socket to visually inspect the location of the rear cables. Then tighten screws and secure the socket.

To avoid disturbing the socket, and its cable connections, it is recommended to use a cable detector instrument. This should confirm the exact positions of the cables. Note our wall brackets have their drill-positions near top of bracket, so it is the spaces behind the top-left and top-right of the socket that must be free of cables.

Same as it is essential to check for cables, if installing your Cable Tidy Shelf above or near central heating radiators, use a detector instrument to check there are no pipes behind the drill positions.

If screw-fixing, what size drill-bit is needed?

First select suitable drill-bit for surface type. As a guide, if installing on plasterboard use 5mm drill-bit, to make the holes ready to accept the wall plugs provided. Take care to ensure the opposite holes are straight line, and no more than 155mm apart! When drilling into wood, no wall plug is required.

Query the lid seems not to want to close properly?

No worries, check the cables are not under the trough part of the top lid. The depth of the trough leaves insufficient space for cables also.

If you’ve excess cable length, use the slots in the base of the lid to loop the cable length in and out of the lid, so not all the excess cable length is in the cavity section!

The toggles are ideal to keep the cables away from the trough area under the top-lid. But ensure they are pushed down, and secure on selected pillars in the cable cavity.

The base section of lid has a pip on its front inner rim. After cables are organized, and kept in place by the toggles, push the front of top-lid to hear ‘CLICK’ sound!

Is there a risk of heat build-up in the cable cavity?

No risk! The cavity in the lid section is designed for low-voltage cables, which do not emit excessive heat - & the lid has multiple vents.
